Transfers to the airport were a bit of a nightmare but I was able to contact our driver from the ship and he saved the day. This was remarkably really the first problem on our adventure. Now to work on getting our $ back from the Viator.
The first flight 11 hour from Hong Kong to Istanbul was only 2/3 full. We were able to spread out and all of us slept. We arrived in Istanbul and raced to find the "free tour" that Turkish Airlines offered. It was freezing and pouring rain and the tours were walking toure and 1 bus tour that would not start for several hours. We dedided to book a private tour from the airport with an "English speaking" guide.
We traveled for about 45 minutes in the pouring rain to reach the Blue Mosque. Our driver had 2 umbrellas that he shared with us. Remarkably the rain stopped. The inside of the Blue Mosque was gorgeous. From the ceiling to the floor, every inch was a work of art. With our wet socks (no shoes alowed inside) we walked past Hagia Sophia since it was not opened yet. Many of the shops were closed for cleaning. Our guide took us to a shop to sample and purchase tea, Turkish Delight and spices. The smells and tastes were strong and fragrant. Not sure how but we got everything that we bought into our suitcases.
The last stop was along the shore for brunch. We stepped into the restaurant and were greeted like VIPs. A plate full of small bites; sardines, octopus, tzatziki, hummus, olives....and delicious crusty bread was served. The owner brought a tray with 3 beautiful fish for us to select from. We all agreed on the sea bass.Minutes later the most delicious grilled fish was on our table. The flavor is beyond words. We did have a little sticker shock from the price but it was well worth it.
Back to the airport for our 11.5 hour flight o ATL. We went through 3 security checks. The final once was after we arrived at our gate. Carryon luggage was checked and be were frisked and wanded. It was a little scary but good to know that safety was not taken lightly.
The plane was packed and the flight long. We did gain back the day that we lost on the trip across the International Date Line. Everyone was ready to get. home. Princess took her final picture of the trip from the plane as the sun set on an amazing adventure.
